I have been looking at my training schedule and am happy with how I've started.
I did a mini-power-walk yesterday... A quick half hour just to condition my heart-rate.
In between walks I've been doing a lot of stretching and calisthenics to strengthen, and I'm looking into different strength training activities. I will be taking the bike out and dusting it off... Cross Training seems to be a good option for me. The challenge for me, of course, is balancing this with the kids and their schedules.
My First Long Walk.... about 10 miles will be from my parents house, along the beach, around PV to the Whale Watch area.... That's an ambitious start... but hey, that's my first LONG goal... Still to be put on the calendar... Let's just see what happens.
I also want to do this with cost and budget in mind. It's not just going to impact me... but the whole family. And the "support" team that I'm going to need. What is that going to cost? And Why? What is the goal, the end result, and what is the true objective? Sure it's a personal goal, but it's not all about me. I want to do this for a cause.... So... how... who... when... why??? Do I set this up as a NOT-For-Profit event... and encourage and invite people and organizations to "walk with me" or "support me".... that's an idea.
Each Leg (10 miles) would be in support of a "group" or "non-profit" that is already existing... and I can walk and raise money for them... After raising $$$ to cover the costs... the remaining money would go to the "Leg" who sponsored me. OOOhhhhhhh.... I like this way of thinking.
Although I've used the date: July 19th 2012 (my 40th birthday) as the date... I have realized that If I leave the week that the kids are finished with school.... Around the 23rd of June... there is No Way I'd be at the Destination (of New York) by mid July.... so Where I end up on my 40th birthday will be determined once the actual walking route is planned. At a glance, I think I would be somewhere in the great state of Colorado... So.... who wants to Walk Across Colorado with me for my Birthday? I think it would be fun to hike and catch some of the wonderful sights of this country along the way.... Any out-doorzy folks are welcome to join me and have some fun too....
When will I actually make the NYC? I DON'T KNOW YET... My calculations at the moment say 4.2 months.... I would like to arrive BEFORE the kids have their first day of School in September....
but that doesn't take into account the terrain, the weather, and other factors... It's realistic to think that on some days I can walk "20 miles" because it's easier terrain and the weather is ideal,,,... where as walking through some parts, uphill, through the mountains etc would take longer, and not be as far.... so Which Way I actually travel is to be mapped out.
Anyone willing to make suggestions as to MUST go this way versus DON'T GO THAT WAY because of whatever obstacles... I'm willing to listen and put down your suggestions... or follow your lead and directions.
Okay... Those are my thoughts for the day!!!
